City police and animal-control officers rescued five ailing dogs from an abandoned Port St. Lucie home Sunday night.
Three pit bulls stared from the windows of the abandoned house, on the 4900 block of NW Ever Road, when officers arrived. Each was in poor condition, according to a police report. Two other “very ill and extremely emaciated” dogs were found inside, the report said.
Officers believe that the animals were left alone for up to 30 days based on the conditions of the house. Trash, animal feces and bugs covered majority of the interior, police said.
There were also holes in the walls, which might have been caused by the animals trying to eat there way out of the home, according to the police report.
The dogs were taken to the Veterinarian Medical Center of St. Lucie County for treatment. They were inn stable condition at the St. Lucie County Humane Society on Monday.
Police are still investigating this incident.
