The city’s Hazmat team was called to a home on 33rd Street during a death investigation Thursday morning, briefly shutting down roads in the Northwood neighborhood.
City police found one person dead inside the home west of North Flagler Drive from an apparent drug overdose. Authorities, fearing the home may be contaminated by hazardous materials such as fentanyl, called the city’s fire rescue crews to respond.
Police have not confirmed the person’s cause of death, nor have they commented on whether fentanyl was found in the home.
“I think you’re going to see it more and more often,” said Sgt. David Lefont, police spokesman, about Hazmat teams being called to the scenes of suspected overdoses.
Last year more than 200 people died in Palm Beach County with fentanyl in their system. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office warned residents in March about an apparent bad batch of heroin after 10 people fatally overdosed on the same day.
