NEW: Stolen West Palm gun recovered during Port St. Lucie raid

A gun stolen from West Palm Beach was among several weapons recovered Tuesday morning from the Port St. Lucie home of a convicted felon, city police said.

Police said they also found three loaded assault rifles with high capacity magazines, one of which had an illegally modified short barrel, in Joshua Peterson’s home on the 1600 block of Southwest Commerce Avenue, south of Crosstown Parkway between Interstate 95 and Florida’s Turnpike.

They also found three loaded handguns, including the one stolen from West Palm Beach, as well as 2,000 rounds of live ammunition, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Peterson has felony convictions in Florida and in Tennessee, Port St. Lucie police said. He currently is on probation through June 2019 for a prior firearms possession charge.

Police said they arrested Peterson following an investigation that began with a tip the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. An anonymous caller reported that Peterson has displayed a firearm in public. During an early morning raid, ATF agents and the city police department’s special investigations division conducted an unannounced probation check.

A cursory search revealed one loaded firearm under Peterson’s pillow, police said. One of the rifles was stored in a closet area amid a child’s stuffed animals.
