NEW: Police ID suspect, victim in Port St. Lucie murder-suicide

A 55-year-old man has been identified as the gunman in a murder-suicide that occurred Wednesday afternoon in a Port St. Lucie neighborhood.

City police say that Donald Shaffer shot and killed Josh Barran, 29, then turned the gun and killed himself. Prior to the shooting, Shaffer followed a pickup occupied by his estranged wife and Barran, who were in a dating relationship, police said.

As Barran picked pulled into a driveway near Southwest Savona Boulevard and Southwest Fletcher Lane, Shaffer walked up and shot him, police. The truck was still in drive and accelerated forward before coming to a rest against a home on the 1300 block of Southwest Fletcher Lane, near Southwest Savona Boulevard.

Shaffer shot himself while standing near the pickup’s passenger door, police said. Barran was taken to a hospital, where he died. Shaffer’s wife was not harmed.

Police say Shaffer and his wife were in the process of getting divorced.

Investigators say they recovered one .357 magnum revolver and two spent shell casings.
