NEW: Husband helped wife flee from state lockup, Riviera police say

The husband of an inmate who had recently escaped from a state correctional facility was arrested Friday for allegedly helping his wife go free.

Authorities found Elijah Waters, 40, and Silver D. Bean, 37, at the Travelodge hotel on West Blue Heron Boulevard, east of Interstate 95. Bean escaped from the Bradenton Bridge Community Release Center on May 6 where she was serving three years for cocaine possession, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. She was arrested in Belle Glade in June 2016.

Manatee County detectives contacted Waters on May 7 to make him aware of her escape and that there was a warrant out for her arrest, according to Riviera Beach police records.

Authorities believed Waters picked up Bean from prison, so they entered Waters’ license plate into a state database. His vehicle appeared at the Travelodge early Friday, according to the report.

Police found his car in the parking lot and confirmed his stay with the hotel clerk. Officers knocked on their door and requested that Bean leave the room but she did not, according to the report.

An officer then noticed Bean and Waters open the curtains to look at police.

Waters, a South Bay resident, was arrested for aiding prisoner escape and Bean was arrested for prison escape just after 7 a.m., according to the report. Waters’ bond was set at $3,000. He was released Saturday afternoon, according to Palm Beach County Jail records. His next court appearance is June 11.
