LATEST: Gardens woman faces grand theft charge in theft of dog

A Palm Beach Gardens woman accused of stealing a dog from a pet store Saturday faces a charge of grand theft following her arrest Tuesday morning, city police said.

Heather Ryan, 48, was taken into custody without incident at about 5 a.m. Tuesday near the Legacy Place outdoor shopping mall, police said. She was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail later in the day after being questioned by city police.

Ryan was initially described as a person of interest in the disappearance of “Teddy,” an 11-year-old Maltese mix who had been dropped off by its owner Saturday for grooming at the Petco store at the outdoor shopping mall.

Police allege that Ryan showed up at the store and picked up Teddy, taking him without his owner’s permission.

It does not appear that Ryan and the dog’s owner knew each other, said Maj. Paul Rogers, spokesman for Palm Beach Gardens police.

Teddy was returned to his owner and appeared to be OK, Rogers said. Attempts to reach the owner for comment Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Palm Beach County court records show that Ryan has had traffic infractions has but no prior criminal history.
