NEW: Gardens army recruiter pleads not guilty to child-porn charges

An Army recruiter who was arrested in April on child pornography charges pleaded not guilty during a hearing Thursday in federal court.

During a two-minute hearing at the West Palm Beach federal courthouse, Staff Sgt. Danilo Fernandez II waived a reading of the indictment and requested a jury trial, court records show.

He pleaded not guilty to one count each of the attempted production of child pornography, the receipt of child pornography and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity.

Authorities say that Fernandez, 36, of Palm Beach Gardens was working as a recruiter for the Army in the fall of 2017 when he met a Palm Beach County student.

Fernandez texted and then engaged in sexually explicit Snapchat messages with the student, who was a minor at the time, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Over a period of months,  he allegedly encouraged the student to take and send him lewd and lascivious images and videos, authorities said.

Fernandez recruited at Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens, authorities have said.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said this month that is also investigating an allegation made against Fernandez by a student from a Martin County school.
