A man in the Jacksonville-area faces manslaughter charges after his 2-year-old son drowned in a pool while he was supposed to be watching him, police said.
Ashley Smart, 41, was supposedly high on heroin when the incident happened on Tuesday morning, and police determined “culpable negligence” led to the boy’s death, WJXT reports.
Officials rushed the toddler to a local hospital where he was “in full cardiac failure” and died 10 minutes later.
Smart faces additional drug charges when police found marijuana, five bags of heroin, three needles, a tourniquet and a spoon in his Fleming Island home, WJXT reports.
Smart is being held at the local jail on a $277,000 bond, according to WJXT.
