Prosecutors have not made a final decision, at least for now, on whether to pursue charges against a 53-year-old Boynton Beach woman who shot her husband and herself earlier this year after the couple argued over complaints from their homeowner’s association.
Lisa Barreca could still potentially face armed attempted murder charges in the Feb. 5 shooting of her husband, Eric, at their Aspen Leaf Drive home. Police said they had been called several times to the home, including two hours before the shooting.
Neighbors told investigators the couple had also been embroiled in a long dispute with the homeowners association at Aspen Glen, off Lawrence Road south of Hypoluxo Road.
According to an arrest report, an argument escalated after police left and Eric Barreca “slapped and pushed Lisa” before she shot him. Eric Barreca sustained five gunshot wounds to his head, both arms, his right leg and his back, but survived his injuries.
The case has unfolded into a classic one of self-defense, with Barreca telling police officers in the scene that she was in fear. Prosecutors on Thursday in a hearing before Circuit Judge Cheryl Caracuzzo did not file charges against Barreca and are expected to make a pemanent charging decision in the case in the coming weeks.
