BREAKING: Third man takes plea in fatal shooting of grandfather in Delray Beach

The third man involved in the 2015 fatal shooting and attempted robbery of a 65-year-old man in Delray Beach pleaded guilty to lesser charges Monday afternoon, hours into jury selection for his first-degree murder trial.

James Jacoby Jones, 33,  pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted robbery just before 2 p.m., after a morning of jury selection before Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with credit for 1,250 days, or more than three years, that he already has served.

Harut Saroyan, 22, pleaded guilty Thursday before Kelley and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting of his step-grandfather, Lucanes Joseph. In January, 24-year-old Desmond Davis pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

On Feb. 6, 2015, Joseph walked out of his Delray Beach home, where two masked men approached him. After a physical struggle, Joseph was shot and killed.

Davis, who told police he acted as a lookout, said he fired a gun in the direction of the men to scare Joseph, but said his bullets didn’t kill him. Jones also pulled out a gun and shot at the 65-year-old man, according to city police. Investigators said multiple shell casings from different guns were found at the scene.

Davis told police Saroyan was the one who planned the robbery. Saroyan told the two men his step-grandfather had “50 stacks,” or $50,000, in his home.
