Body of woman found in Martin County ID’d as Wellington woman


2:30 p.m. Friday UPDATE: A body found Tuesday in a cane field near the Okeechobee border has been identified as a 56-year-old Wellington woman, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sandra Hawk was in failing health prior to her death, said the sheriff’s office, who said she died from self-inflicted wounds.

The body was discovered shortly before 2:15 p.m. Tuesday on the 15000 block of Southwest Conners Highway, near Lake Okeechobee and to the north of Port Mayaca.

The woman’s identification and her cause of death are pending the outcome of an autopsy, the sheriff’s office said.

The area where there woman’s body was found has an Okeechobee mailing address but falls within Martin County’s jurisdiction, the sheriff’s office said.
