After 20 years of working for the Boynton Beach Police Department, including four as chief, Chief Jeffrey Katz announced he is resigning to take a position as chief of the Chesterfield County, Va., Police Department.

Katz, 45, hired as chief in July 2013, was a member of the city police department since 1998. He was the lieutenant in charge of the Professional Standards Division before being named chief.

At the time of his hire, the department had been dealing with numerous issues, many of which were not resolved until recently. Katz immediately implemented policies and procedures that helped the image of the department.

He also dealt head-on with the heroin epidemic in Boynton, with both arrests and education on the issue in the city.
