Getting giddy over Bouchaine’s 2014 Napa Pinot Noir

Sipping Bouchaine’s 2014 Napa Pinot Noir turns my palate giddy. Lots of blueberry and tart cherry notes make for an exceptionally easy pairing with a cracker topped with double cream brie, sour cherry spread and a sprig of thyme. Want to sip a glass and munch on a few pistachios? Super. The grilled chicken thighs and smashed potatoes were also a heavenly accompaniment. There aren’t many $19.99 pinots that are sustainably farmed with hit-it-out-of-the-park deliciousness. Several visits to the winery in Carneros, Calif., have made me a fan for life. A must stop when in California wine country.

The earliest designs on summer tomatoes are always the raw ones: tomato sandwiches, tomato salads, tomatoes peeled and sliced and fanned out on a platter, glistening like something more carnal than vegetal. They are the preparations for which the supermarket counterpart offers no fair approximation, the ones the tomato righteous may forgo eight or...

Make your own avocado toast with tips from top Twin Cities chefs

Like all obsessions, this one started quietly, and then quickly snowballed. Earlier this year, I was reading “On Vegetables” (Phaidon, $49.95), the fascinating garden-to-kitchen tour guide written by Los Angeles chef Jeremy Fox, and the recipe on page 55 struck a chord. “Avocado toast is ubiquitous on Southern California menus, and...

The smell of freshly baked treats greets patrons as they step into the newly opened Village Oven at 1407 Union St., in Brunswick.  The brand new bistro, just five weeks in operation, was formerly the site of a car wash, but has found new life as a Euro-inspired cafe. The latest locale to join the ranks of the downtown business is the brain child...
