Night owls can get a taste of Philly at Big Al’s Steaks

MENU

The signature item here is the Philly cheesesteak, which comes in a small or regular size (think of a 6-inch to foot-long sub) with choice of cheese whiz, provolone or American cheese melted in between slices of ribeye steak. Burgers, hot dogs, cold sandwiches, salads and various sides like fries and onion rings are offered.

ATMOSPHERE

The quick-service eatery is essentially an ordering window with around five or six tables adjacent to the counter, on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Southeast Fifth Street. There’s also a toppings bar with plenty of condiments for your cheesesteak.

FAVORITE FOOD/PRICE

I had to try the namesake Philly cheesesteak ($9.95) and it certainly fulfilled the craving, packing slices of ribeye steak, melted provolone cheese and caramelized onions in a soft Italian roll. The small side of French fries ($3.75) was hot, which gave them that fresh out of the fryer taste. They were quite salted, so ketchup didn’t even cross my mind. My boyfriend ordered the sweet potato fries ($4.25), but actually preferred the fries I ordered.

REASON TO GO

You can order grub here up until 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, so it’s perfect for those looking for a late-night bite after dancing or enjoying live music on Atlantic Avenue.

SERVICE

The cashier was patient while we looked up at the menu plastered on the window’s walls. He also walked over to where we were sitting to let us know our food was ready at the counter.

NOISE LEVEL

Noise isn’t really a factor since it’s a walk-up-and-pay style restaurant, however, if you choose to eat at one of the few tables nearby — especially at night — be prepared for the clamor of people and cars wandering up and down the crowded street.

KID FRIENDLY

There is a Kids’ Specials menu just for them, featuring $5.95 items like a Kid Philly; turkey, ham or Italian hoagie; and chicken nuggets. An adventurous eater might want to try a full portion of the “Tater Chip” chicken fingers, which are coated with bread crumbs and crushed potato chips. This is also nice for families who need something to just grab and go after a day at the beach.
