I have to admit it took me a while to warm up to The Alchemist Gastropub.
First, there was the “Gastropub” title that conjured images of bar food that tries too hard. Then there was the jinxed location thing: Two restaurants closed in that same Clematis Street space in the year and a half before Alchemist’s October 2014 opening in downtown West Palm Beach.
But now it has been more than two and a half years since that debut and the pub has settled nicely into its speakeasy-meets-steampunk setting, as well as its eclectic menu.
And, truth be told, I’m kind of in love with it.

The place possesses the vintage feel of great old haunts in New Orleans. It also possesses the ability to make killer chicharrones (crispy pork rinds). It sells these hot, decadent bites by the bucket. They’re addictive – as are the homemade s’mores dessert one can assemble and cook by tabletop fire.
