It’s called Mathews Brewing. And for owner David Mathews, who’s been home-brewing for more than 20 years, it’s a dream come true. This guy is basically living the life we were all advised to by our grade school teachers and college professors.
“Anytime you can turn your hobby into a business, life can be good,” Mathews told The Palm Beach Post after the opening.
We gave them a visit on Jan. 6, a week after their opening, to see what’s to love, and we found quite a lot. Here are 8 reasons we’re loving Mathews Brewing in Lake Worth and think you should too.
The bar or “tap room” was purposely designed with an open concept to expose the brewery operations behind it. You can literally see the staff brewing the beer in the back. You’ll get your fresh beers — straight from tanks to hands.

This is awesome. Because Lake Worth is already known for its talented locals, a new brewery wouldn’t be complete without a formal stage to expose them. These people are nothing but super friendly. On your first visit, buy the sampler which gives you 5-ounce samples of all the beers. The staff will tell you the order in which you should drink them and how to appreciate each one. That’s right. They’re ready to turn you into a beer connoisseur.
Besides the broad options of beers brewed as we know, the owner has added several English pins to the mix. This means he can serve beer the English way — that is, without CO2.
The beer tastes different this way, much richer. And yes, going this deep means you will definitely up your craft beer bragging rights.
Like the beer you ordered? Get it to go. The bartenders can pour your favorite beer in a branded, 8-ounce can.
The patio is awesome, especially because you can bring your dog with you. The owner thought it would be important to allow human’s best friends as he had dogs himself. His logo, which is actually of a dog, is in memory of his beloved dog “Dakota,” a 15-year-old Jack Russel. Even the door handles in the brewery are dog bones.
The dog-friendly patio has a covered area next to the building with several tables, a beer garden with more seating and several picnic tables will be placed near the stage where the chatty ones can sit and mingle. You can also enjoy a game of cornhole or Connect 4.
If you start getting hungry, no worries. The brewery will have food trucks several days a week by the patio.

If you love a good story, this is one of them.
Civil engineer David Mathews, 55, of West Palm Beach decided to leave his full-time job in the engineering industry to follow his dream: brewing beers. The USF grad had already been garage-brewing for more than 23 years from his Boynton Beach home, and in his West Palm house the past ten years.
Mathews has risked everything he owns to open Lake Worth’s first brewery ever.
Why else would you come here? The beers are great.
Expect several IPAs, stouts, Pale Ales, American Pale Ales, English Brown Ale, Porter and hybrids.
“The Florida Hop Juice” is one of their highest rated on “Untappd,” and “The PB and Jealous” is a hybrid that literally tastes like you’ve just eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s brewed with real roasted peanuts and berries. There’s also the Sweet Emotion that tastes as sweet as a cream soda. Like something a bit darker? Try the “Heavy Metal,” a double IPA with an 8.4 ABV (alcohol by volume).
As craft breweries continue popping up across Palm Beach County, there’s one definite: We’ll be in good company as we enjoy the flavors the craft beer world has to offer.
