'Miracle' continues at Delray's Death Or Glory, one of the country's best new bars

Death Or Glory, a downtown Delray Beach watering hole that opened in April in the historic Falcon House, has been named one of the country's "Best New Bars of 2017" by the website Supercall.

The Supercall lineup includes 14 bars from craft cocktail hotspots such as New York City, Chicago and San Francisco. Death Or Glory is the only Florida locale on the list.

Death Or Glory is currently hosting a special holiday-themed pop-up in conjunction with more than 50 other bars across the country. The festive "Miracle" theme includes extensive kitschy decor, a menu of 10 potent cocktails served in special mugs and glassware, and even soap flakes masquerading as snow billowing out onto Northeast Sixth Avenue.

Supercall says Death or Glory "strives to be a neighborhood respite just outside of the tourist (and snowbird)-heavy parts of Delray." The bar and restaurant - a partnership of Ayme Harrison, Isaac Grillo, April DeVona and Annie Blake - "is all about passion for great cocktails and the local community."

Blake previously worked with noted book publisher and barware manufacturer Cocktail Kingdom, whose founder Greg Boehm created the "Miracle on 9th Street" pop-up concept that has spread globally. There's only one other Miracle location in Florida, The Courtesy Bar in Orlando.

Grillo and DeVona bring experience in the South Florida market as co-founders of Repour Bar in Miami. And Harrison, former owner of Kreepy Tiki Lounge in Fort Lauderdale, brings a creative flair to the cocktail menu and a newly opened outdoor tiki bar packed with delicious rum concoctions.

Their secret weapon is chef Jessie Steel, whose decadent dishes pair perfectly with the drinks. The staff also includes some of the area's most talented bartenders, who are having fun with the whimsical lineup of Miracle cocktails such as You’ll Shoot Your Rye Out and Yippie Ki Yay Mother F****r!

Get in the spirit of the season at the Miracle pop-up through New Year’s Eve. The special Tiki bar menu returns in 2018, Harrison said.

Death Or Glory is at 116 N.E. Sixth Ave. in Delray Beach. Go to DeathOrGloryBar.com or call (561) 808-8814.

On a Sunday in December for the past three years, swarms of foodie revelers have invaded The Gardens Mall for the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival’s grand-finale event. This year, the setting for the festival’s centerpiece event will be dramatically different: The fest’s Grand Tasting is moving 12 miles south to the Palm Beach Convention...
Slippery dumplings are a genuine Delmarvel
Slippery dumplings are a genuine Delmarvel

Every year, I join a few friends for a weekend away in an old house. The first night's dinner is always roast chicken. As the designated cook, I know that Sunday's dinner lurks in the remains of that bird - one that will warm bellies with only a little bit of effort. I simmer the bones with onion, carrot and herbs to make stock, and then, about an...

This startup says it wants to fight poverty. A food stamp giant is blocking it.

Four years ago, Jimmy Chen left a lucrative perch as a product manager at Facebook to found Propel, what he calls an “anti-poverty software company.” In 2016, the Brooklyn startup released a smartphone app that lets food stamp recipients easily look up how much money was left in their accounts, rather than call an 800 number or keep paper...

Here's how to skip the jar and make a fresh salsa that's right for you

Standing in the salsa aisle at the grocery store can make your head hurt. Classic tomato? Or go rogue with corn or peach? Big jar? Small jar? Mild, medium or hot? How hot is hot? Of course, you can't beat the convenience of grabbing whatever jar is closest to you. But homemade salsa can be a great way to make a satisfying dip that is exactly to your...

Confused about bittersweet? Dutch cocoa? And what's up with white chocolate?

Chocolate is what we eat when we’re stressed. In other words, chocolate shouldn’t cause stress. But it can when the grocery shelves hold not only our beloved semisweet chips, but chocolate labeled bittersweet, milk, white, unsweetened, German’s, baking and more. And what’s up with all those percentages? Even cocoa comes in choices...
