Food news: Pollo Tropical embraces ‘No Antibiotics Ever’ trend

Following a poultry industry trend away from antibiotic use, Pollo Tropical recently announced it would use only “No Antibiotics Ever” (NAE) chicken at all its locations. 

In embracing the NAE movement, the Miami-based national chain, known for its Caribbean-style, citrus marinated chicken, joined poultry industry leaders like Tyson Foods and Perdue and fast-food giant McDonald’s in addressing public concerns about the overuse of antibiotics. 

“Our supply chain team has spent a tremendous amount of time and effort to ensure that we provide the best quality chicken in a highly responsible manner to our guests,” said Rich Stockinger, president and CEO of Pollo Tropical’s parent company, Fiesta Restaurant Group. 

Early last year, the FDA issued guidelines restricting antibiotic use in animals, with a focus on the antimicrobial medication that’s used for humans. Scientists and health experts have linked the rise in drug resistant superbugs in humans to antibiotic misuse. 

Popular for its fire-grilled chicken, Pollo Tropical celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
