West Palm Beach moves closer to quiet zone for train horns

West Palm Beach officials notified the Federal Railroad Administration on Friday of their intent to create a quiet zone to silence train horns along Brightline’s route.

Federal officials have 21 days to review the city’s plan and decide whether safety upgrades along the Florida East Coast Railway tracks meet the requirements to allow train operators to stop blasting their horns at crossings.

If federal officials sign off on the city’s plan, Assistant City Administrator Scott Kelly said Monday it would likely be about a month before the horns stop blowing.

West Palm Beach is poised to become the first of six cities and towns in Palm Beach County to implement a quiet zone along Brightline’s path.

Quiet zones require a higher level of safety because trains don't sound their horns at crossings.

If quiet zones are established in all six cities along Brightline's route, train operators will no longer be required to blow their horns between 15th Street in West Palm Beach and the county line in Boca Raton.  The zone applies to all traffic on the line, including freight locomotives and passenger trains.

Operators still have the option to sound the horn if they see a safety issue on the tracks, such as a vehicle stopped in the middle of a crossing.
