A 26-year-old man died after a shooting near West Palm Beach on Saturday afternoon, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.
Benton Lee died shortly after arriving at a local hospital, according to a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
Saturday afternoon, deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 7600 block of Hooper Road, an industrial area near Florida’s Turnpike and Southern Boulevard.
Deputies arrived to find Lee with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said it’s investigating Lee’s death as a homicide.
So far, the motive and the suspect’s identity are a mystery.
Lee is the 71st homicide victim in 2018, according to a Palm Beach Post database.
The site of Lee’s death is near two other homicide incidents this year:
- On Feb. 19, three men were killed on Belvedere Road near Florida’s Turnpike. Chauncey Christian, 21; Jerry Dunois, 20, and Deandre Jean Louis, 17, were killed in a crash and shooting.
- On March 17, Lianet Ruiz Denis was found dead after officers found a burning home and three burning cars. The man charged in the crime, Yulexis Sosa Rodriguez, told sheriff’s deputies at the time that she had admitted to cheating on him. The incident took place at a mobile home park on Belvedere Road, just west of the February incident.
Anyone with information about Lee’s death is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County 800-458-8477 (TIPS).
