Gas prices are lower than a week ago, more decreases expected

The average price of gasoline fell 4 cents a gallon in the last week in both Palm Beach County and Florida.

The county’s average for regular stood at $2.62 Monday, while the state average was $2.49, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report.

“Gasoline should slide a few cents more this week, based on last week’s decline in wholesale prices,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said.

“Pump prices are sliding right now because crude and gasoline output have remained strong. However, gas prices are still forecast to rise 20 cents in the coming months, as demand climbs and refineries switch to summer blend gasoline,” Jenkins said.

On average, motorists are paying $3 more for a full tank compared to this time last year, AAA said.

Crude oil is $14 per barrel more than last year, preventing a plunge at the pump.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy said, “Oil prices remain volatile yet several dollars off recent highs. Gasoline prices remain in somewhat of a limbo as a result, with a mixed bag at pumps across the United States.

“Thus far, we have seen a market that’s lacked solid upward movement when it usually sees exactly that,” DeHaan said. “This could lend weight to oil prices being too high, but at the same time, we continue to see if any major disruptions occur at U.S. refineries to offset any devaluation in the price of oil.

“So far the balance is in the middle, but threats remain in the months ahead- we’re still expecting a surge, so motorists aren’t off the hook by any means yet,” DeHaan said.
