Bundle up: Here’s what you need to know about South Florida’s big chill

UPDATE: Just how cold was it? See morning temperatures from your hometown

• When will the big temperature drop hit?

Temperatures dropped throughout Wednesday but should be their coldest Thursday and Friday mornings when areas of Palm Beach County are forecast to fall into the 30s with a wind chill in the 20s.

• What’s the coldest it will get and at what time?

The coldest temperatures will be near dawn on Thursday and Friday.

• Will it hit a record?

No, but it will be close. The record overnight cold for Jan. 4 at Palm Beach International Airport is 32 degrees recorded in 1918. The record for Jan. 5 is 34 degrees measured in 1920.

• How long will the cold last?

The cold snap will be brief. Saturday’s high temperature is forecast to reach 66 with an overnight low of 54 degrees. Sunday’s high is forecast to reach 72 degrees with an overnight low of 61.

• Could we get snow?

No, sorry, it won’t snow this time.

• Will you have to put the heat on in your house?

This is a matter of personal preference, home type and length of cold spell. The CDC does not offer specific guidelines on indoor temperature, but does say older adults often make less body heat, while infants lose body heat more easily than adults. Because the cold will be only be here a couple of days, extra blankets might suffice.

• What flights will be affected at PBIA?

Anyone flying to the Northeast this week should check their flight status, particularly to Boston’s Logan International Airport along with major air-travel hubs in New York and Philadelphia.

• Are shelters open?

Two shelters opened in Palm Beach County Wednesday night:

Westgate Community Center, 3691 Oswego Ave., West Palm Beach

West County Senior Center, 2916 State Road 15, Belle Glade

Palm Tran is providing transportation to shelters. Contact the Palm Beach County Crisis Line at 211 or (866) 882-2991.
