Weekly South Florida Fishing Report - January 25, 2018

OFFSHORE

Off Jensen Beach, the sailfish action has been red hot. Anglers trolling ballyhoo in 180 to 220 feet of water have reported getting more than a dozen hookups in a day.

Mixed in with them have been a few dolphin. Not big numbers or huge fish, but they’re out there.

There have also been a few decent-sized blackfin tuna in the 12- to 15-pound range caught in the past week.

Similar to Jensen Beach, the sailfish action has been incredible off Jupiter.

Fishing in 100 to 200 feet from the Lake Worth Inlet to Jupiter Inlet, anglers have been catching these hard fighters using live goggle eyes and greenies.

The kingfish bite has picked up a bit in recent days, with them hitting on dead bait and greenies from the Juno Pier to the Jupiter Inlet.

Anglers bottom fishing in the area are reporting catching some yellowtail and vermilion snapper, but that overall it hasn’t been that good.

One shop owner stated the recent conflicting directions of wind and ocean current has hurt the bottom fishing.

Off Boynton Beach, there have also been sailfish. One captain reported a catch-and-release using dead sardines.

There have been some dolphin caught in 150 feet of water. Though no record-breakers, there have been a few up to 10 pounds.

Kingfish up to 12 pounds are being caught on dead sardines or cigar minnows in 90 to 110 feet of water.

One boat captain reported spotting a large whaleshark in 190 feet of water.

About 20 cobia were cruising with it and the captain and his guests managed to hook several and eventually landed a 40-pounder.

Overall, the cobia fishing should begin picking up soon.

Another charter captain who was night fishing off Delray and catching and releasing a few Atlantic sharpnose sharks, reported having an approximately 12-foot hammerhead come up and steal away one of the sharpnose.

INSHORE

Though the forecasted rough seas will likely put a damper on it this weekend, the pompano fishing has been excellent in Hobe Sound of late.

Anglers using long rods to reach the outside trough and using fish bites, clams and live sand fleas are enjoying catching these fish.

The relief bridges along the Stuart and Jensen Causeways have been hot spots recently for pompano, big sheepshead and redfish. Live shrimp on jigs has worked best.

Though the surf fishing for pompano will cool off this weekend, fishing for them at the Juno Pier should still be good.

The main focus will be on getting out past the churned-up water line and into the greenish “pompano” water.

Anglers looking to avoid the rough seas, but still wanting to get their fix this weekend should check out the Intracoastal Waterway.

Using live shrimp, ladyfish, jack crevalle and mangrove snapper are being caught.

Fishing for snook around pilings of the Loxahatchee River Bridge could be a good call this weekend as well.

With the cooler temperatures and the bridge pilings holding heat, snook will sometimes congregate around them.

The beaches from the Lake Worth Pier north to around Sloan’s Curve have had a good pompano bite lately with them hitting on Goofy Jigs and pompano.

Anglers fishing off Lantana Public Beach have reported catching sheepshead using live shrimp and sand fleas.

The sheepshead bite has also been good at the Boynton Inlet using crabs on an incoming tide.

Jetty fishermen are also reporting catching a few snook, jack crevalle, bluefish and croaker.

Fishing at the Lantana Bridge, anglers are catching sheepshead and drum on clam strips and live crabs and a few redfish using cut mullet.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE

Out on the lake, the speckled perch bite is still really good.

Anglers using minnows and fishing along the Kissimmee River and catching plenty of these tasty panfish.
