Lake Worth Christian’s Sarah Franklin named volleyball player of year


2017 PALM BEACH POST GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ALL-AREA TEAM

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Sarah Franklin, Lake Worth Christian, So., OH

Why? The sophomore helped lead the Defenders to the Class 3A regional finals this season, finishing with 405 kills, 78 blocks, 254 service points and 92 aces.

What was the highlight of your season? Beating Divine Savior Academy to get to the regional finals.

When did you first start playing volleyball? My first time playing volleyball was at the Lake Worth Christian camp in 2013.

What are your college plans? My plans are to play Division I volleyball, but I am undecided right now.

Who is the athlete you most admire, and why? I most admire (beach volleyball Olympian) Kerri Walsh, because she was so dedicated to what she did.

What is the song that gets you most pumped up before a game? Taylor Swift’s “Ready for It?”

What was your favorite movie this year? The new “Beauty and the Beast” movie.

What’s your favorite social media tool, and why? Instagram, because it’s so easy to see what is going on with my friends.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Alex Clarke, Benjamin

She led the Buccaneers to their second consecutive berth in the Class 4A state championship match while finishing 16-4 on the season.

FIRST TEAM

Katy Blain, Benjamin, Sr., middle blocker: The Bucs’ captain, she’s played in every match during her four seasons at the school. This year, she finished with 203 kills and 57 blocks.

Ellie Blain, Benjamin, So., outside hitter: Along with her sister, Katy, she helped lead the Bucs to their second consecutive state title game. She finished with 228 kills, 145 digs and 37 aces.

Marlena Kincaid, Boca Raton Christian, Sr., setter: She led the Blazers in several categories this season, finishing with 433 service points, 121 aces and 440 assists.

Jolie Neeley, Jupiter Christian, Sr., middle hitter: She led the Eagles in kills with 232, and also added 106 blocks and 36 aces.

Jackie Schner, Grandview Prep, Jr., outside hitter: She averaged 26 kills and 19 digs per match in leading the Pride to their first district championship.

Emma Shaddix, Jupiter Christian, Sr., right side/outside hitter: A key player for the state-semifinalist Eagles, the Florida Southern commit recorded 140 blocks, and added 218 kills and 28 aces.

Morgan Shedd, Lake Worth Christian, Sr., setter: A Defenders veteran, she led the team in assists with 564, and added 251 service points and 44 aces.
