The Benjamin girls volleyball team finished as Class 4A state runners-up for a second consecutive season, falling 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 to Tampa-Carrollwood on Thursday afternoon in Jacksonville.

“The girls played really well,” Benjamin coach Alex Clarke said. “We had big leads in all three sets, but just couldn’t finish. That has been a struggle for us all season.”

Katy Blain had 10 kills to lead the Buccaneers (16-4) against the Patriots (25-2). Sister Ellie Blain added nine kills, three blocks and six digs. Sierra Barron contributed 30 assists and three aces and Lauren Lindahl had a season-high 27 digs.

“It was heartbreaking for our seniors, after they worked so hard and helped build this program,” Clarke said of the loss, before quickly adding that she has several talented players returning next season. “We carried 15 players on our varsity roster this season because I wanted the sophomores to see what it takes and help them get ready to take the reins next season.

“Our aim, of course, is always to win and I think it’s very realistic for this team to have another good season next year.”
