Baseball: No. 2 Dwyer escapes in bottom of ninth


Charlie Von-Werne’s homered in the bottom of the ninth to lift the second-ranked Dwyer baseball team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Miami-Westminster Christian on Thursday in Palm Beach Gardens.

Von-Werne was 3-for-5 and scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth to set the stage for his extra-inning heroics for the Panthers (18-5).

No. 4 Wellington 5, South Fork 0: Conner Dunnam struck out four batters and Dylan Toste and Angelo Burnelis each doubled as the Wolverines (18-5) won in Stuart.

Spanish River 13, Pahokee 3: Cole McNally struck out five in three innings and was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored and Hesh Getson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Sharks (12-9) handled the Blue Devils in Boca Raton. Ezekiel Hernandez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Blue Devils.

Atlantic 3, Forest Hill 2: Justin Verisco was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run as the Eagles (13-10) edged the Falcons.

Oxbridge Academy 10, Aquinas Institute (N.Y) 0: Alex Rao pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts as the Thunderwolves won in West Palm Beach. Shawn Stuerer was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Andrew Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
