Will Atlantic make state football championship game? Writers picks

Two Palm Beach County football teams remain in state title contention after winning their third-round postseason games Friday.

Atlantic defeated Davie-Western to move to the Class 8A state semifinals, while Oxbridge Academy earned a berth in the Class 3A state championship game Dec. 9 in Orlando with a shutout of FSU University School.

The ThunderWolves get a week off to prepare, but the Eagles have one more game to play before next week’s state championships in Orlando.

Atlantic hosts surprising Miami High Friday night. Our preview is below. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Miami High (11-1) at Atlantic (11-1): The Eagles are in the state semifinals for the first time since 2001, and they face a dangerous opponent that has knocked off three higher seeds during the postseason. The Stingarees are coming off a 28-22 victory over No. 1 seed Miami-Columbus last week, and overcame a 22-point, third-quarter deficit in the process. Atlantic had an easier time against Davie-Western, jumping out to a 35-6 fourth-quarter lead before surrendering two late touchdowns. As is often the case, defense led the way in that game. The Eagles picked off the Wildcats five times, and returned two for scores. The unit will need another strong performance against Miami High, which has proved it can score against some of South Florida’s top teams.
