Report: USC passing game coordinator Tyson Helton will be new offensive coordinator Tennessee

A USC offensive assistant is heading to Tennessee and it’s not Tee Martin.

According to a report by Chris Low of ESPN, USC passing game coordinator and QB coach Tyson Helton, brother of head coach Clay Helton, will become the offensive coordinator at Tennessee. He will join new Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt, formerly the defensive coordinator at Alabama.

Jeremy Pruitt already putting together Tennessee staff. As reported by Volquest, USC passing game coordinator and QBs coach Tyson Helton will join him along with Colorado State OC/OL coach Will Friend, Colorado State DB coach Terry Fair and Tennessee RB coach Robert Gillespie.

Helton, 40, came to the Trojans before the 2016. He has shared play-calling duties with Martin. In 2016 he was named the QB Coach of the Year by Football Scoop for his work with USC QB Sam Darnold.

Before coming to coach with his brother, he spent the previous 2 years (2014-15) as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Western Kentucky.  WKU broke more than two dozen school offensive records under Helton, including the points scored record in each of his 2 years.
