Penn State RB Saquon Barkley says he’ll play in bowl game; breaking down the Nittany Lions win over Nebraska

Penn State football is the No. 1 topic in We are… Awake every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Nittany Lions sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Penn State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

To bowl or not to bowl

After Penn State’s victory over Nebraska on Saturday, junior running back Saquon Barkley said he would play in whatever bowl game the Nittany Lions end up in.

The question has popped up in recent weeks in the wake of running backs Leonard Fournette and Chrisitan McCaffery skipping bowl games for LSU and Stanford last season, opting not to risk any injury after declaring for the NFL draft.

Barkely assured the assembled media on Saturday he will play in the bowl game, but Clay Sauertieg of Black Shoes Diaries says Barkley should skip the postseason.

Either way, questions about Barkley’s future beyond the postseason will be aplenty writes Gordie Jones of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Counting snaps

Lions 247 writer Andrew Callahan has a breakdown of the offensive snaps for every Penn State player in the Nittany Lions 56-44 nutty win over Nebraska on Saturday.

Upon further review

John McGonigal of the Centre Daily Times has a review of Penn State’s win over Nebraska in his weekly Good, Bad and Ugly recap.

McGonigal notes:

It’s pretty easy to have fun when you’re hanging 609 yards on a conference foe. That’s the most yards Penn State’s recorded in a game since dropping 661 on Rutgers in 1995. Of course, 42 of those yards came on a Penn State touchdown pass with 58 seconds left, leading to a heated exchange between Joe Paterno and Rutgers coach Doug Graber after the game.

McGonigal also notes that Penn State piled up 32 first downs in the win too, the most since 2005 against Minnesota.

Keeping it 100

Who knows how much more Penn State could have or would have scored if coach James Franklin didn’t pull quarterback Trace McSorley and running back Saquon Barkley after building a 42-10 halftime lead in the win on Saturday, but a rather wild second-half effort by Nebraska led to a 100-point game at Beaver Stadium.

Mark Wogenrich of the Allentown Morning Call tries to make sense of it all.

Defensive line depth shines

Normally it should be difficult to find any positives on defense in a 56-44 game, but Colin Weider of Victory Bell Rings says Penn State’s depth along the defensive front raised its level of play in the victory.

A strong closing argument

Penn State has one regular season game remaining, a 3:30pm kickoff on the road at Maryland’s Byrd Stadium.

The Nittany Lions are expected to close strong in the finale, writes PennLive’s Greg Pickel.
