Kirk Ferentz says star freshman Tristan Wirfs will lose his redshirt, play immediately

One of the top-ranked recruits in Iowa’s 2017 class is about to hit the field.

Speaking on his radio show Wednesday, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said freshman offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs will lose his redshirt and play Saturday. “He’s in the army now,” Ferentz said.

Ferentz on Tristan Wirfs and the redshirt situation: "It's off." "He'll be in there at some point on Saturday. He's in the army now."

Wirfs arrived at Iowa as a 4-star recruit out of nearby Mount Vernon. He was the No. 33 offensive tackle in his class and the No. 3 player from the state of Iowa, per 247Sports, and he was chosen for the 2017 U.S. Army All-America Bowl. He drew interest from Iowa State, Minnesota and Vanderbilt before committing to the Hawkeyes.

Iowa is in a pinch on the offensive line as starting right tackle Ike Boettger is out for the season with an achilles injury suffered in last week’s win over Iowa State. With Boettger out, Wirfs is listed as the second-string right tackle headed into Saturday’s matchup against North Texas. He could also see time at guard and will likely appear on special teams as well.
