Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher praises his freshman class

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher praised the play of his freshman class during a segment on his weekly radio show.

Fisher likes to devote one segment each week to underclassmen that have stood out in practice and in games. He began this week by singling out the play of FSU’s true freshmen, and it began with wide receiver D.J. Matthews, who had been limited all preseason camp with a hamstring injury, but was declared healthy right before the start of the season.

“D.J. Matthews, it’s starting to really click for him,” Fisher said during a segment on his radio show reported by the T allahassee Democrat, “Of course Cam Akers (RB) is in there. Khalan Laborn (RB), you’re seeing some of that. Tamorrion Terry (WR) is doing some things. Josh Kaindoh (DE) keeps getting better and better.”

Fisher added that he’s quite impress with the entire 2017 freshman class because of their intelligence and character. He wouldn’t trade one true freshmen player on the roster.

A pass. A catch. A missed tackle. What went wrong for the Saints?

It is a play that will haunt the New Orleans Saints and their fans for a long time. They needed one stop. They needed to tackle a defenseless wide receiver in bounds. Do that, and they would be headed to the NFC Championship. But caught up in the moment, a rookie missed a tackle, and it cost his team everything. Here is what went wrong: It was 3rd-and-10...

Jaguars spoil Steelers' rematch plans

The talk among Jacksonville Jaguars players at their team breakfast Sunday was about what Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell tweeted Saturday night. "Everybody saw it," Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell said later Sunday. "In the morning at breakfast, everybody was kind of talking about it like, 'Oh, OK.'. . . It awoken...

Australian Open: Within hours, three top Americans fall

Did the U.S. Open really end only four months ago? It seemed much more distant than that on the opening day of the Australian Open, as the leading American women fell at the first hurdle, one by one, on the biggest show courts at Melbourne Park. First was Sloane Stephens, the surprise U.S. Open champion last September. Stephens, seeded 13th here, has...

What is Joe Maddon’s slogan for 2018 season? Cubs can’t wait

Cubs manager Joe Maddon was once dubbed “the ambassador of all good times” by former Rays pitcher Jamey Wright, alluding to Maddon’s ability to keep things light during the long, hard grind.   One of Maddon’s traditions with Tampa Bay was coming up with a new slogan every year, which he typically announced at the beginning...

If Eagles can bottle their energy again, all bets are off against Vikings

The footage that emerged from the aftermath looked like a Hunter S. Thompson home video, a football player in full uniform doing interviews in a German shepherd mask, a middle-aged billionaire either dancing or having a seizure or both. A divisional playoff game ended and a fever dream broke out, and all an outsider could do was step back and marvel...
