FAU falls, Florida, Florida St. win in NCAA softball regional openers

Florida Atlantic ace Kylee Hanson struck out 10 Central Florida batters Friday, but one mistake cost the former Jupiter High standout as the Knights edged the No. 22 Owls 1-0 in an NCAA softball regional matchup in Gainesville

Center fielder Jasmine Acevedo’s solo home run in the top of the fifth helped UCF escape with the victory and snap FAU’s school-record 21-game winning streak. Acevedo also doubled for the Knights (37-20).

Hanson (28-4) took the loss despite giving up just the one run on six hits. She didn’t walk a batter.

Paige Turnier, meanwhile, dominated FAU batters, holding the Owls (50-8) to just two hits, both by center fielder Christina Martinez.

“It’s hard to win when you don’t score and we were very undisciplined at the plate,” FAU coach Joan Joyce said.

The Owls will face Alabama State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in an elimination. game.

Florida 11, Alabama State 0 (5): The top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Gators (54-5) rolled to the victory over the Hornets (28-26) in Gainesville.

Kelsey Stewart, Amanda Lorenz, Nicole DeWitt and Janell Wheaton each collected two hits to lead the Gators’ 12-hit attack.

Aleshia Ocasio pitched four shutout innings and Kelly Barnhill struck out all three batters she faced as they combined on a 1-hitter.

The Gators will face UCF at noon Saturday.

Florida State 1, FAMU 0: The Seminoles (49-8) edged the Rattlers (27-29) in Tallahassee. FSU advances to face South Carolina, which shut down South Florida 2-0.

Maybe Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has found a formula for winning without star freshman Marvin Bagley III. Granted, things didn’t go so smoothly on Sunday afternoon. It didn’t matter, though. Grayson Allen got off to a fast start and the rest of the No. 12 Blue Devils picked up the slack down the stretch as they ...

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Last season, Florida baseball coach Kevin O’Sullivan was highly optimistic that the encouraging signs he had seen in the fall and the preseason from his hitters would lead to a strong start at the plate for the Gators.
