Gov. Rick Scott and two other Republican Gulf Coast governors have asked President Obama to immediately suspend National Guard furloughs, saying the cutbacks make their states vulnerable during hurricane season.
Scott, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant sent Obama a letter Monday, the first day of 11 weeks of furloughs and pay cuts resulting from across-the-board, automatic budget cuts, also known as “sequestration,” ordered by Congress early this year.
