UPDATE: Pence, Trump meet at Mar-a-Lago Saturday night


FINAL UPDATE: Vice President Mike Pence has made his first visit to President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club since Trump took office in January.

According to pool reports, Trump invited Pence — who spoke Saturday night at a Club for Growth gathering at The Breakers in Palm Beach — to join the president, first lady Melania Trump, Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, Laura Perlmutter and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross for dessert at the estate. Pence arrived at Mar-a-Lago about 8:35 p.m., after the Trumps, Perlmutters and Ross had finished eating dinner.

Tomorrow, Pence will attend the morning service at the Church by the Glades in Coral Springs, while the president is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C.

8:30 p.m. UPDATE: Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will join President Donald Trump, Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter and their wives for dinner, according to a White House pool report. 

Ross, who lives part-time in Palm Beach, joined the president for the trip from Washington, D.C., yesterday aboard Air Force One. 

 7:45 p.m. UPDATE: President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were both in town Saturday as Trump hunkered down for a fifth presidential weekend at Mar-a-Lago while Pence sought to assuage conservative skeptics during his first visit to the island since taking office.

The Palm Beach County Democratic Party, meanwhile, tried to capitalize on anti-Trump sentiment by bringing in U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee and a much-televised Trump critic, for a fundraiser in West Palm Beach.

6:50 p.m. UPDATE: All is quiet on Palm Beach, where President Donald Trump is spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago Club. 

It’s Trump’s fifth visit to his part-time home since taking office in January. As he dines tonight with Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to speak to a Club for Growth gathering at The Breakers, just a short drive up the island.

Pence arrived at Palm Beach International Airport just before 4:45 p.m., after visiting a Jacksonville business earlier in the day to discuss jobs and health care with Gov. Rick Scott. 

On the West Palm Beach side of the Intracoastal, U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., spoke to Democrats at two fundraisers. Read more here.

5:30 p.m. UPDATE: Vice President Mike Pence has arrived in Palm Beach County, where he’ll speak at a Club for Growth meeting at The Breakers tonight.

The White House said that tomorrow, Pence will attend the morning service at Church by the Glades in Coral Springs before returning to Washington, D.C.

The White House was unable to confirm Saturday afternoon if Pence would spend any time with President Donald Trump, who is here for a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago Club. 

5 p.m. UPDATE: Later today, President Donald Trump will host Vice President Mike Pence, who arrived this afternoon at Palm Beach International Airport aboard Air Force Two. It would be Pence’s first visit to what Trump has called the “southern White House.”

The official schedule for this evening has Trump dining with Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, and Pence at The Breakers to speak to The Club for Growth,an organization that lobbies for free-market policies.

Gov. Rick Scott hopped a ride on Air Force Two with Pence, but was said to be headed to his home in Naples, not Mar-a-Lago.

Pence and Scott were in Jacksonville earlier on Saturday where they met with small business owners. In Jacksonville, Pence ripped Obamacare.

The event in Jacksonville comes as Scott is embroiled in a battle with fellow Republican lawmakers in Tallahassee on business incentives.

This past Thursday, Scott appeared at the groundbreaking ceremony for the OneWeb facility on the Space Coast. OneWeb, which is backed by Japanese tech giant SoftBank, has been touted by Trump.

As for trump, he spent a good part of the day at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. His staff said he tending to business there, but a photo circulated on social media showed him wearing golf clothing and a glove.

4 p.m. UPDATE: President Trump will be joined at Mar-a-Lago by Vice President Mike Pence, who is expected to arrive this afternoon.

Trump is scheduled to receive his daily briefing at this hour, and then speak with Brazilian President Michel Temer.

The president will dine tonight with Ike Perlmutter, the CEO of Marvel Entertainment, and his wife at Mar-a-Lago. Pence is scheduled to speak at a dinner hosted by The Club for Growth, an organization that lobbies for free-market policies.

No official word on whether Trump played a round of golf at his West Palm Beach club between meetings earlier today, but photos posted on social media showed him wearing a golf glove and a short sleeve shirt and slacks.

About a dozen Trump supporters cheered the president as he returned to Mar-a-Lago. They held Trump/Pence campaign signs and flags, cheering and clapping as he drove by.

3 p.m. UPDATE: President Trump is back at Mar-a-Lago, and Vice President Mike Pence is heading there after presiding over a roundtable in Jacksonville.

Pence told the crowd at Mac Papers that “when small business is strong, America is strong.” He said the administration has told federal agencies they must eliminate two regulations before “they issue any more red tape ” on businesses.

He also said efforts to end illegal immigration, build the Keystone and Dakota pipelines, improve infrastructure and cut taxes will boost jobs and the economy. And, he said, “the Obamacare nightmare is about to end.”

Pence said Obamacare premiums in Florida have risen 19 percent. He said Mac Papers told him they have spent $300,000 “not on jobs or on investments to create more jobs” but in trying to comply with Obamacare mandates and regulations.

The event in Jacksonville comes as Scott is embroiled in a battle with fellow Republican lawmakers in Tallahassee on business incentives.

2 p.m. UPDATE: President Trump is expected to return to Mar-a-Lago shortly from Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

The White House staff said he was holding meetings at the club. With a health care vote in the House of Representatives possible this week and Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation hearings scheduled to start Monday, there is no shortage of work.

The president could also have played a round of golf, which he has done on previous weekend visits. But the White House staff has not confirmed whether he did or not.

Vice President Mike Pence is slated to meet with Gov. Rick Scott and small business leaders in Jacksonville this afternoon. The topic of discussion at the roundtable at Mac Papers is jobs.

1:30 p.m. UPDATE: President Trump critic, U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, has fired a missive at Trump’s tweets about his meeting with German leader Angela Merkel.

Schiff, who is speaking at a Democratic Party fundraiser in West Palm Beach this afternoon, tweeted:

“Glad you think it was great, @POTUS. Would have been greater if you didn’t treat NATO like protection racket, or allies like deadbeats.”

Schiff was referring to a pair of tweets from Trump this morning.

The first tweet read:

“Despite what you have heard from the FAKE NEWS, I had a GREAT meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Nevertheless, Germany owes…..”

That tweet was followed by a second one that added:

“…vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

1 p.m. UPDATE: President Trump is at Trump International Golf Club, but there’s drama back at the northern White House.

A televised news report says Secret Service agents drew weaponry and cleared the front lawn of the official presidential mansion after it is believed an individual may have attempted to enter a buffer zone between the public access area and the White House fence.

Last week, while Trump was in Washington, D.C., a California man scaled over the White House fence and was on the grounds of the mansion for roughly 17 minutes before Secret Service agents responded.

There was also a bit of drama around Mar-a-Lago last night. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday it issued a citation to a juvenile who crashed his Dodge Charger into a fence near Mar-a-Lago “at a high rate of speed.

The crash happened just after 6 p.m. on Friday, prior to Trump’s arrival at the southern White House.

Noon UPDATEWhile President Trump is holed up at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Vice President Mike Pence is on his way to Florida.

Pence is expected to meet up with Gov. Rick Scott in Jacksonville early this afternoon at Mac Papers, a paper, printing and packaging company. The two will speak with small business leaders to discuss jobs and economic development. The high-profile event comes as Scott is embroiled in a battle with fellow Republican lawmakers in Tallahassee on business incentives.

No word, however, on whether the president is playing a round. Golf has been a schedule mainstay on Trump’s prior weekend visits to the southern White House.

For example, on March 4, the White House said the president was conducting meetings at the West Palm Beach club featuring the Jim Fazio-designed golf course while taking phone calls and maybe “might hit a few balls.”

Post political reporter and blogger George Bennett has tweeted a golf outing today would mark the ninth of the Trump presidency.

10 a.m. UPDATE: So much for a quiet Saturday at home in Mar-a-Lago.

President Trump fired off two tweets this morning regarding his meeting yesterday with German leader Angela Merkel.

The first tweet read:

“Despite what you have heard from the FAKE NEWS, I had a GREAT meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Nevertheless, Germany owes…..”

That tweet was followed by a second one that added:

“…vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

President Trump left Mar-a-Lago earlier this morning and is now at his West Palm Beach golf club.

9:30 a.m. UPDATE: It’s going to be a different Saturday schedule for President Donald Trump on this fifth weekend trip to the southern White House.

The morning schedule does not include a drive to one of the president’s two Palm Beach County golf clubs. Instead, the White House said to expect “a fairly quiet morning and early afternoon.” That will be of some relief to area commuters, especially on a weekend with area bridge construction and boat show preparations.

Activity around Mar-a-Lago will then pick up in the afternoon. Trump will receive his daily briefing at 4 p.m. and then will speak by phone with the president of Brazil, Michel Temer.

By the time those are done, Vice President Mike Pence will be in town. It will mark the the first time the two men gather at Mar-a-Lago since the inauguration. Pence will first stop in Jacksonville for a gathering with Gov. Rick Scott before arriving in Palm Beach International Airport in the afternoon.

This evening, Pence is scheduled to speak at a dinner hosted by The Club for Growth, an organization that lobbies for free-market policies.

There will be other political news in West Palm Beach, too. A leading Democratic critic of Trump on intelligence matters, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, will be the headliner at a fundraiser for the Palm Beach County Democratic Party.
