Lionfish Derby set for September
Yikes! Lionfish are cool in aquariums, but not in Atlantic waters. The voracious invaders have got to go, and divers who want to help in that effort may want to mark their calendars for the Sept. 14 Lionfish Derby at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (mile marker 102.5) in Key Largo. During the daylong event, divers will capture and remove the non-native lionfish from Keys waters.
Derby divers will vie for more than $3,500 in prize money for catching the most lionfish. To register, call 305-852-0030 or visit www.reef.org/lionfish/derbies. Early registration is $120 an includes one pair of puncture-resistant gloves per team.
