Considering Tiger Woods’ history with the Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass, finishing his first round Thursday in a tie for fourth place at 5-under-par should have been cause for celebration.
Woods, whose average score of 71.4 at Sawgrass is his worst on any course on which he has played 50 or more rounds, broke 70 for the first time in 15 opening rounds at the Players Championship and played under conditions that figure to be much more difficult than he’ll face today, when he gets a morning tee time in what should be near-perfect scoring conditions.
