No. 2 Florida State loses backup quarterback for season

Coach Jimbo Fisher said it was a meniscus injury but he’s not sure of the severity. Coker will have surgery on Tuesday. It’s possible that Coker could return for Florida State’s bowl game.

Coker was noticeably limping in the second half. He had entered the game early in the second half with Florida State ahead 49-0.

A red-shirt sophomore, Coker completed 4 of 9 passes for 37 yards against Wake Forest. He was sacked twice while playing behind Florida State’s inexperienced No. 2 offensive line.

Coker completed 18 of 36 passes for 250 yards and an interception this season. He was expected to see significant playing time in mop-up duty as No. 2 Florida State faces Syracuse (5-4) on Saturday and then Idaho (1-9) next week.

No. 3 quarterback Sean Maguire will be elevated to the backup spot behind Jameis Winston.

Back at practice: Fisher said three starters would return to the practice field Monday afternoon. Safety Terrence Brooks (concussion) and center Bryan Stork (ankle) missed the Wake Forest game, and wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin suffered a concussion in the first half.

ACC honors Whitfield: Freshman Levonte Whitfield was named the ACC’s specialist of the week after he returned a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Wake Forest.

Idaho game set: The FSU-Idaho game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
