West Palm Beach is set to become the first city in the state to reimburse unmarried domestic partners, gay or straight, for the taxes they pay on health insurance because the relationship is not recognized by the federal government.
Under current federal law, straight married couples with employer-provided health insurance are not taxed on the value of that coverage. But committed unmarried couples do not receive the same benefit.
