In a reminder of the fickle nature of corporate headquarters jobs, a division of conglomerate United Technologies will close an office in Boca Raton this summer and lay off 75 workers.
UTC Fire & Security told state officials that it will close its office at 791 Park of Commerce Blvd. by Sept. 1.
The company in 2010 was approved for $150,000 in job incentives from the state, Palm Beach County and the city of Boca Raton. UTC Fire & Security collected no incentives for its short-lived Boca operation, according to state records, although it did receive $625,000 in cash in 2010 to expand another office near Bradenton.
In a letter to Palm Beach County, a UTC Fire & Security official said the move was because of “changes in the company’s business plans.”
UTC Fire & Security employed the sort of high-wage workers coveted by economic developers. The Boca payroll includes 30 software engineers and 10 quality assurance engineers, the company told the state.
United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) also owns aerospace firms Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky, both of which have a large presence in northwestern Palm Beach County.
