What was billed as a dialogue on a hotly contested $6 million donation by the private prison company GEO Group to Florida Atlantic University, turned out Friday to be two sides talking by each other with little or no meeting of minds.
“It’s a done deal,” FAU President Mary Jane Saunders told a crowd of 300, who were on both sides of the issue. In exchange for payments of $500,000 for the next 12 years, the school’s football stadium, home of the FAU Owls, will be named for GEO, a multinational prison management company based in Boca Raton. Saunders called the gift a a philanthropic act that would greatly benefit the school.
