Since winning a bare-knuckle Democratic primary runoff against Lois Frankel in 1992, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings hasn’t faced serious opposition while getting elected to Congress 11 times.
But Hastings, D-Miramar, could draw a Democratic primary challenge next year from Port of Palm Beach Commissioner Jean Enright, who says she plans to file candidate papers shortly after July 1. If the three-term Port official follows through on her pledge, she’ll be the first Hastings opponent with a significant electoral base since Frankel, who was a state House member when she clashed with Hastings more than two decades ago.
