Key black lawmakers said Thursday the Florida Legislature needs to debate changes in the “stand your ground” law to avoid a boycott of the state.
State Sen. Chris Smith and House Minority Leader Perry Thurston, both Fort Lauderdale Democrats, urged GOP leaders to allow debate on bills that Smith and other legislators, mostly Democrats, introduced last year to alter the controversial 2005 law. Those bills were blocked by GOP legislators and were never debated.
