Unswayed by the House’s top two Republicans, Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Okeechobee, said Tuesday he remains opposed to U.S. military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for using chemical weapons.
Rooney, who is a deputy whip for the House GOP, said conversations with his constituents during the August congressional recess reaffirmed his opposition to military action in Syria. Rooney said he wasn’t moved by the announcements Tuesday that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., support President Barack Obama’s call for U.S. intervention in Syria without using ground troops.
