I appreciate the editorial focusing on the transition to Common Core coming in 2015 as well as changes to the teacher evaluation system (“Avoid repeat of FCAT errors”). I would like to make sure that your readers know that the evaluation system is still deeply flawed. As an art teacher, my scores are based partly on principal evaluations and partly on the school score in reading, which includes students I have never taught. However, limiting my score to just students I have taught will still be unfair since I am teaching art, for goodness sake, not reading!
This problem has no solution short of eliminating the use of test scores as part of my evaluation because art is not given every year to every student in every grade. An end-of-year course exam with multiple choice questions in art? Give me a break!
