I was absolutely horrified to read that the Palm Beach County School Board was considering a merger of its own police force with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, which might result in sheriff’s deputies patrolling our schools. Given the number of questionable shootings and killings of unarmed citizens by sheriff’s deputies in the past few years, it’s inconceivable that the board would want to put the lives of our children in danger by exposing them to this senseless and unchecked brutality.
Obviously there is a major problem with the sheriff’s office, whether it be poor leadership, inadequate training, bad personnel decisions or just a complete disregard for the people whom the department is serving. Whatever the reason, this change should not even be considered. I’d hate to see Sheriff Ric Bradshaw at the podium, again, explaining how one of his deputies “had no other option but to use deadly force,” this time in response to a special needs student pulling a cellphone out of his pocket.
