I am sure that Rhonda Swan had the best medical advice regarding the treatment of breast cancer, and I know that we must each follow our own path to wellness (“Angelina Jolie’s decision is right only for her.”) However, I disagree with her about Angelina Jolie’s choice of a mastectomy as a prevention and her choice of words describing the scars left.
I had a mastectomy in 1990 with two glands involved, and had the other side done as a preventive measure a few years later. I did not have reconstruction and no longer wear a prosthesis, just because I can. I did not have pain from the surgery — perhaps because I elected not to have reconstruction — and I do not regard the scars on my chest as hideous. My breasts never defined who I am.
