Regarding the article “Vero voters back FPL switch,” about Vero Beach residents voting to sell the municipal electric utility, Florida Power & Light Co. President Eric Silagy is reported to have said during a recent investors conference that “FPL’s ads tout the lowest customer bills in the state.” FPL has low bills in a few categories, but FPL does not have anywhere near the lowest bills across the board.
The Florida Municipal Electric Association conducts a monthly utility bill analysis with 15 comparisons in residential, commercial and industrial categories. There are 15 categories because consumers and businesses use electricity in various amounts, some large, some small. In January 2013, municipal electric utilities were lowest in nine categories, while FPL was lowest in six of 15 categories. In fact, another utility was tied with FPL in the number of categories – Lakeland Electric.
