My first reaction to the “step on Jesus”exercise at Florida Atlantic University was admittedly reactionary. How could an instructor be so insensitive? What could have been the point?
After reading both sides, I now look at it more objectively. Not only was I wrong in my negative judgment of Deandre Poole, there was a very positive motive. It was not to desecrate Jesus’ name or mock one’s faith but to strengthen it. In the students’ reluctance or refusal to step, they would acknowledge the immense power of symbolism.
