My heart goes out to the parents of 9-year-old Andrew Curtis, killed while riding his bike on a sidewalk in Jupiter.
I have been riding bicycles for nearly 60 years and still ride about 40 miles a week along A1A in Jupiter. Many years ago I taught bicycle safety in a Catholic elementary school. I taught my students that their bikes were considered vehicles under state statutes and recommended that they ride on the right-hand side of the road, obeying all traffic regulations by riding in the same direction as traffic. I also reinforced that they should assume that drivers do not see them and that they should ride defensively. I cannot tell you the number of times this premise has saved me from collisions with vehicles.
