Accused of improperly using one of his county-sponsored public forums to tout favored candidates, Palm Beach County Commissioner Jess Santamaria responded at first with a solution that doesn’t get at the problem.
Commissioner Santamaria should have said that he will never again use his regular monthly forums, which operate in part on county government money and county employee manpower, as a place for candidates to campaign. Instead, he initially told The Post’s Jennifer Sorentrue that he simply will stop using county equipment at the forums, which he holds at a shopping mall that he owns in Wellington. County employees cannot participate in political activity on the job and county money or equipment cannot be used for political purposes.
